Skintology: Your ultimate relaxation destination - New York, NY
Tuesday, January 8th, 2008Skintology is located in the hip happenin’ Chelsea area on the lower west side. The outside décor and lobby is the best I’ve seen so far. When a person walks down the street, he or she can’t help but look through the glass towards the waterfall. Their selection of products have been the biggest I have seen as of yet, as well as their premium packages. It also helps that there are two floors to the spa, which allow for many customers to receive treatment, giving them a feeling of assurance. This assurance is an effect of having the satisfaction of being in an actual spa, rather than an apartment suite. There are a countless number of options to choose from such as: skin spa(facials), laser hair removal, body spa (massages, body wraps,) Microdermabrasion, medical spa (botox, Restylane, Radiance soft tissue augmentation, waxing, permanent makeup, manicures and pedicures, and so on).
The really cool aspect of the spa is the different rooms that are available. It reminds me of EPCOT in a way because you can receive massages in the Japanese room, facials in the Moroccan room and so forth. I received the express facial ($75) which included an hour massage, and three exfoliating masques to leave me feeling relaxed and ready for the next day.
When I came in to the Japanese room for my massage, I stripped down and laid down on something I have never witnessed before: a heated bed. Definitely a plus. Very light techno music was playing, as well as birds chirping and water bubbling. The layout of the room was very interesting because of all the rocks on the walls, gravel on the ground, and plants everywhere – I felt comfortable. The massage was a little impersonal because I was hearing the impatient sighs of the masseuse some of the time. The experience was relaxing though, because the full body massage relieved all of the tension in my muscles and made me feel calm.
The facialist, Rachel (who has 20+ years experience), studied my skin and decided what was good for me. She is a witch doctor of sorts, finding the right mixture to match my skin type. My skin was thoroughly cleansed, and was rid of the black heads one by one (a painful experience, but pain is beauty). After the removal of my deep blackheads, an anti septic was applied and a mask made of Aloe and seaweed was put on me. It was cold, but it helped heal, detoxify, remove redness, and calm down my skin. Rachel was by far the friendliest person I encountered on my trip, and treated me with respect. After her treatment, I received comments from my friends and family about my radiant skin, and I told them to go and do it. Rachel says that pores can run pretty deep and get infected, so facials once a month is very good for skin. If someone has acne or skin condition, going more often would be required.
Overall, I believe that the Skintology spa has what it takes to be a great spa: great location (7th Avenue between 20th and 21st Streets. The F,V, or 1 train go there), great looking spa, and just a great atmosphere. There is a high level of professionalism and experience in Skintology, so disappointment is not an option.
